CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Luke Kuechly knows Carolinas defence didnt have much bite earlier in the season. He said that made Saturday all the more special. The Panthers held Arizona to 78 yards and forced three turnovers in a 27-16 win, the franchises first post-season victory in nine years. Its the fewest yards ever allowed in an NFL post-season game.We know who we are — menacing, stifling and we are going to get after you, cornerback Josh Norman said. We know when there is blood in the water and when there is, our sharks are going to eat.The Panthers (8-8-1) held Arizona to 12 yards in the second half, intercepted Ryan Lindley twice and sacked him four times in a dominating performance.Carolinas defence has undergone a remarkable turnaround this season, going from 27th in the league in Week 7 to 10th entering the playoffs. And the Panthers only seem to be getting better by the week.We had a lot of new guys early on who had to get accustomed to each other, said Kuechly, the All-Pro middle linebacker who had a game-high 10 tackles and a key interception. Now were all together and communicating — and thats huge. The New York Giants held the previous NFL record for fewest yards in a post-season game, limiting Cleveland to 86 yards on Dec. 21, 1958.Cam Newton overcame two turnovers and threw for 198 yards and two touchdowns and Jonathan Stewart ran for 123 yards and a score on a rain-soaked afternoon. The Panthers had 386 yards.Newton was quick to deflect attention to his defensive teammates after his first career playoff win, calling their performance lights out. When those guys play like that, it makes it easier on us on our part, Newton said. Those guys did everything, turnovers, they stopped them. That is championship football right there and weve got to do our part offensively to put points up on the board. The Panthers will play at top-seeded Seattle next weekend if Dallas beats Detroit on Sunday. If the Lions win, the Panthers play at Green Bay.It appeared the Panthers wouldnt get the yardage record, but Arizona began lateraling the ball around the field on the final play and lost 19 yards. It was a fitting end to the Cardinals offensive ineptitude.Panthers linebacker Thomas Davis, the only player remaining from the last Carolina team that won a playoff game, called it the most dominating defensive performance hes ever been around. Our coaches did a great job and when they lined up in their formations we knew exactly what to expect, Davis said. We just ran to the ball and made plays. After a 9-1 start, Arizonas once promising season was undone by a rash of injuries, including to quarterbacks Carson Palmer and Drew Stanton.Lindley simply wasnt up to the task of leading a playoff team.Trailing 27-14, Arizona recovered a Newton fumble and returned to the Carolina 8. But with a chance to get his team back on the game, Lindley fired over the middle but was intercepted by Kuechly, essentially sealing the Carolina win with 11:48 left in the game.Arizona coach Bruce Arians refused to pin the blame on his young quarterback.I thought he did great up until the first interception, Arians said. He managed the game as well as he could. We didnt do a good job of putting ourselves in manageable third downs. But we got the big break and he tried to force one in that should have never been thrown. The Cardinals finished the season 11-6, but lost five of their final seven games. As a team, we always fought, defensive tackle Frostee Rucker said. It was always the next man up. At some point, we just didnt have anything left. Everyone should hold their heads high. Every person gave it their all, this whole season, win or loss.Trailing by one at halftime the Panthers scored two touchdowns in a span of 1 minute, 32 seconds late in the third quarter to take control.Rookie running back Fozzy Whittaker caught a pass in the flat from Newton, reversed fields and got a key block from Kelvin Benjamin to spring him for a 39-yard touchdown. On the ensuing kickoff, Melvin White stripped returner Ted Ginn Jr., a former Panther, at the Arizona 3 and Kevin Reddick recovered for Carolina. A pass interference penalty on Tony Jefferson on third down gave Carolina a new set of downs, and Newton took advantage. He found wide-open fullback Mike Tolbert in the left flat for a 1-yard touchdown and a 27-14 lead.Carolina outgained Arizona 208-65 in the first half, but entered the locker room trailing 14-13 after two costly turnovers led to two Cardinals touchdowns.NOTES: Panthers rookie wide receiver Philly Brown left with a shoulder injury and did not return. ... Charles Johnson had two sacks for the Panthers. ... Arizona had 27 yards rushing on 15 carries.___AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFL Maikel Franco Jersey . It doesnt appear hes learning his lesson. The Manchester United winger woke up to back-page headlines of "Conman" and "Ashleys New Dive Shame" on Wednesday after his latest theatrical tumble earned United a penalty, which was missed by Robin van Persie in the 0-0 draw against Real Sociedad in the Champions League. Young was also condemned by former United captains Roy Keane and Ray Wilkins and was the target of heavy criticism on social networking sites, with the latest incident further sullying his reputation. "This is as bad for me as all these over-the-top tackles were getting at the moment because that is a conning of the referee," Wilkins said on Sky Sports. "Hes getting a bad name." Youngs image was once of a talented winger who had a fearsome cross and was one of English footballs leading dead-ball exponents. It earned him a big-money move to United from Aston Villa in 2011. Now, two years into his career at United, his name is invariably accompanied by the words "dive" or "cheat." Luis Suarez and Gareth Bale have faced similar accusations and the slur is tough to shake off. Only two months ago, United manager David Moyes said he had "had a word with Ashley privately" after a diving controversy during a Premier League match against Crystal Palace. "t;Ive always said I dont like diving," Moyes said at the time.dddddddddddd "He deserved to get booked. I dont want any of my players diving. I dont want anybody doing it." Those comments echoed the warning that Moyes predecessor, Alex Ferguson, gave to Young in 2012 after a match against Queens Park Rangers when the wingers fall got QPR midfielder Shaun Derry sent off. "I left him out of the next game," Ferguson recounts in his recently published autobiography, "and told him that the last thing he needed as a Manchester United player was a reputation for going down easily." "Going to ground too easily was not something I tolerated," Ferguson said. On this occasion, Moyes argued that Young got a "tug in the box" on Tuesday from Sociedad defender Markel Bergara, and replays showed there was contact, however slight. Moyes defence didnt appear entirely convincing, though, and it certainly didnt stop the backlash from the former professionals and the media. Young already faces a fight for his United career following the emergence of Adnan Januzaj this season and competition from Shinji Kagawa, Nani and Antonio Valencia. He has only started four of Uniteds 10 league games and he wasnt selected in the most recent England squad for the final two World Cup qualifiers. These latest allegations will hardly help his bid to return to the first team for both club and country. Hallandale Beach, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - Nine newly turned 3-year-olds have been entered for Saturdays $100,000 Mucho Macho Man Stakes at Gulfstream Park. The Mucho Macho Man Stakes, formerly the Gulfstream Park Derby, is a mile stakes that kicks off Gulfstream Parks series leading to the $1 million Florida Derby on March 28. Breaking from the far outside post will be trainer Kiaran McLaughlins Mawthooq with Hall of Fame jockey John Velazquez. The chestnut colt, who will be making his third lifetime start, is owned by Shadwell Stable. Hes had a couple of nice works. Hes a nice colt and ready to go, said McLaughlin. Well see how we stand. Mawthooq got his career underway at Belmont Park on Oct. 11 with a distant second going six furlongs. On Nov. 26 at Aqueduct the colt ran away to win a mile race by 10 1/2 lengths with Cornelio Velasquez riding again. We hooked a very nice colt the first time out who we finished second to, McLaughlin said. The next out he won easy on a wet track, so you never know, but hes a really nice horse. He always trained good. Hes straightforward. He was a little keen early in his last race, but Cornelio (Velasquez) did a nice job trying to slow him down early. Hes done everything right since that race. Ask me April 15th how we like him, but right now we like him a lot. Locally based trainer Stanley Gold will saddle Twotwentyfive A for a sixth time in the chestnut colts career. Owned by Jacks or Better Farm, Twotwentyfive A will be ridden by Jesus Rios from post 5. I think the distance will be good for him and its one turn, Gold said. Well throw out the two (Gulfstream Park West) races. He didnt run good there, but he trained good before them and he trained good after them. This is a definite class check. Twotwentyfive A captured the seven-furlong $250,000 Affirmed Division of the Florida Sire Stakes at Gulfstream Park on Sept. 6 just five weeks after winning his debut start. He then finished fourth the next two starts with a fifth on Nov. 29. The colt has banked $203,038. Here is the field for the Mucho Macho Man in post position order: Dekabrist, Oriel Chavez; Amis Flatter, Luis Contreras; Bluegrass Singer, Javier Castellano; A. Rod Again, Julien Leparoux; Twotwentyfive A, Jesus Rios; Honest, Paco Lopez; Juan and Bina, Edgar Prado; Brother Bobo, Gabriel Saez and Mawthooq, John Velazquez. Cheap Padres Jerseys Authentic . "I have had no discussions with Chad Johnson or his representation," Popp said Friday in an email. However, he appeared to confirm a report on Twitter from TSN this week that Johnson was on Montreals negotiation list.Geroy Simon is leaving the CFL a changed man. In 1999, he joined the Winnipeg Blue Bombers feeling individual success would get him back into the NFL. On Wednesday, Simon retired as the most prolific receiver in CFL history, but he says the three Grey Cup championship titles he shared with his teammates are the crowning achievements of his illustrious 15-year CFL career. "Hands down, those are the three most important times in my career and my most cherished accomplishments," Simon said. "When I first got here, winning wasnt that important to me, it was my individual success. "I think the maturity of being here and evolving as a person, as a player with a few great organizations switched my thinking to where it stopped being about my individual success as opposed to winning games and winning Grey Cups." Simon, 38, twice played for teams that won Grey Cups at home -- the 2011 B.C. Lions and last year with the Saskatchewan Roughriders. "Its an amazing feeling to win a Grey Cup at a neutral site," Simon said. "But to win at home twice, not too many people can come close to that. "I feel very privileged to have done it." Then again, being the most prolific receiver in CFL history isnt shabby, either. "No, not at all," Simon said with a chuckle. "Thats a close second." Simon shouldnt be out of football long. Hes talking with the Riders about a front-office job as a club ambassador. The six-foot, 198-pound Simon accumulated 1,029 career catches for 16,352 yards and 103 TDs with Winnipeg (1999-2000), B.C. (01-12) and Saskatchewan (2013). He was the CFLs outstanding player in 06 with 105 catches for 1,856 yards and 15 TDs, capping that campaign with his first Grey Cup title. Simon, who spent part of the 97 season on the Pittsburgh Steelers practice roster, spent two seasons with Winnipeg before signing as a free agent with B.C. It was with the Lions that Simon -- nicknamed Superman for the pose hed strike after scoring TDs -- became a CFL star. But the Lions dealt Simon to Saskatchewan on Jan. 24, 2013 for receiver Justin Harper and a 2014 third-round pick. After missing the Riders first three regular-season games due to injury, Simon finished with 40 catches for 565 yards and three TDs and surpassed Ben Cahoon (1,017) as the CFLs all-time receptions leader. Simon ended the season -- and ultimately his career -- scoring two TDs in Saskatchewans 45-23 Grey Cup win over Hamilton at Mosaic Stadium. However, that Grey Cup win was much different than Simons first two. With B.C., he was a focal point of the offence whereas with Saskatchewan he was a mentor for the youthful Riders. "I still believe I made a huge contribution (with Riders) but it wasnt stats," Simon said. "It was more in the background, in the locker-room helping mentor guys, helping them get to the right spots and get better. "You cant measure those by stats. But to have the opportunity to catch two touchdown passes and win the game in that manner, it was really special to me." Simon was prepared to return for a 16th season before noticing some subtle hints it was time to retire. "Even though I wanted to play, my preparation was quite different than any other year because I was busy doing many other things," Simon said. "Id miss a worrkout here and there and thered be times where instead of going my normal two hours in the gym Id go for an hour.dddddddddddd It was just different. "Now, I wouldve been able to get to training camp and play at a high level, but I think karma has a way of working its way out. Things happen for a reason and I think I was just prepared physically and mentally to move on." Simon finalized the decision to retire about two weeks ago while visiting Rome with his wife. "We talked and I said, Maybe its just time to move on," he said. "She was more concerned than I was. "I didnt want to get to a certain point where I tarnished my legacy on the field with mediocre play or frustration at the end of my career because that would leave a sour taste in my mouth. I left a place that was so good to me for a number of years and went somewhere that was a heated rival. To win a Grey Cup in that place, I felt vindicated, like my career had come full circle and it was time." Simon admitted leaving B.C. was difficult. He and the Lions had mutually agreed to the trade to Saskatchewan after the Lions indicated Simons role would change in 2013. However, Simon said his longtime association with B.C. GM Wally Buono made his transition easier. "In the end its all about business," Simon said. "The B.C. Lions made a business decision so I had to do that for my business, the Simon business. "It was easy for me to move on because I didnt take it personally. I learned from the best in Wally. He takes all the emotion out of it, thats a learned skill. I was around him enough to know its not personal, its just business." B.C. defensive co-ordinator Mark Washington applauded his former teammate deciding to retire on top. "Very proud, very proud of him," Washington said. "A kid from Johnstown, Pa., goes to the University of Maryland and now is the all-time leading everything in the CFL when it comes to receiving. "He had an awesome career -- a storybook-type career. For him to go out as a champion, its fitting." Lions defensive back Ryan Phillips also paid tribute to Simon. "He was just a perfect professional in my opinion," Phillips said. "He taught me the ropes and helped me become a better DB. "Hes definitely a true Hall of Famer in every aspect, not just football-wise, but as a person. Its sad to see him go because of how much he brought to the game and how much he brought to the CFL. He went out in the right fashion." Simon will be eligible for selection into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame in 2017. So will former Montreal quarterback Anthony Calvillo, who retired earlier this off-season as pro footballs all-time passing leader. It would only be fitting if the CFLs all-time leading passer and top receiver were inducted together. "Thats actually awesome, I never thought about that," Simon said. "Anthony Calvillo is a legend in this league, a great example not only for myself but also younger players in this league to aspire to be. "He was a consummate professional throughout his career. Hed be very deserving of going into the Hall of Fame and if we have that opportunity to go together, Id definitely be honoured." --- With files from CP reporter Joshua Clipperton in Vancouver. PHILADELPHIA - DeSean Jackson went from the trading block to the chopping block. Jackson is out in Philly — just as Mark Sanchez was on his way into town. Unable to find a taker on the trade market, the Eagles released him, ending the Pro Bowl wide receivers six-year stint with the team. His playmaking days are over in Philly, and the tailspin from key cog to unexpected free agent comes with a hint that off-field issues are at the root of the split. Jackson thanked the Eagles organization and fans in a statement Friday, and also denied "unfounded reports" that he was released for any reason related to his lifestyle. "I would like to make it very clear that I am not and never have been part of any gang," Jackson said. "I am not a gang member and to speculate and assume that I am involved in such activity off the field is reckless and irresponsible. I work very hard on and off the field and I am a good person with good values. "I am proud of the accomplishments that I have made both on and off the field. I have worked tirelessly to give back to my community and have a positive impact on those in need. It is unfortunate that I now have to defend myself and my intentions. These reports are irresponsible and just not true." Before releasing Jackson, the Eagles announced they had signed Sanchez. Bounced out of New York after the Jets signed Michael Vick last week, Sanchez moved down turnpike to Philadelphia in what essentially was a swap with Vick. "I think we passed each other on the train," Sanchez said, laughing. Sanchez can wave goodbye to Jackson, too. Jackson was coming off a career-best season in Philadelphia, leading the team with 82 catches for 1,332 yards and nine touchdowns. He had a $10.25 million contract for the 2014 season and was signed through 2016. "After careful consideration over this off-season, the Philadelphia Eagles have decided to part ways with DeSean Jackson," the Eagles said in a statement. The Eagles had no other comment. Jacksons agent, Joel Segal, did not immediately return a request for comment. Jackson has 356 career receptions for 6,117 yards and 32 touchdowns. Hes a dangerous returner who went to the Pro Bowl in 2009 after taking two punts the distance. Jackson has four career scores on punt returns, including the memorable 65-yard game-ending return to cap a comeback win over the New York Giants in 2010. The 27-year-old receiver is entering his seventh NFL season. The Eagles had been put out feelers that Jackson was available. Coach Chip Kelly refused to commit on Jacksons return at this weeks NFL meetings. But other teams could be quick to sign one of the NFLs top receivers. Speaking at the NFL meetings, Jets owner Woody Johnson expressed interest in Jackson, saying: "Were looking at a number of players, including DeSean." Jackson could be a showboat — memorably dropping the ball in celebration before the goal line after an apparent long touchdown — and upset the Eagles this season when he lobbied for a new contact shortly after they were eliminated in the playoffs. His departure leaves the Eagles with Riley Cooper, who survived a video scandal that showed him using the N-word at a concert, and Jeremy Maclin as the starting wide receivers. "We just made an extremely unpopular decision, but I couldnt be more excited and happy with where this organization is going!! #FlyEaglesFly," offensive lineman Jason Kelce tweeted. Theres no locker room divide at quarterback. Sanchez, in his sixth year in the league, will be added to a mix of quarterbacks that includes Nick Foles, Matt Barkley and G.J. Kinne. In college, Barkley succeeded Sanchez at Southern California. "Im not stirring up a controversy," Sanchez said at a news conference. "Im here to help this team win." While Vick will compete with Smith for the starting job in New York, Sanchez comes to Philadelphia as insurance. Foles had a breakout sophomore season and led the Eagles to the NFC East title after replacing an injured Vick in Week 5. Foles threw 29 touchdowns and only two interceptions in 11 starts, including a playoff loss to New Orleans. The Eagles still have plenty of offensive playmakers, trading for running back Darren Sproles to go along with NFL rushing champion LeSean McCoy. The options were part of what made Philadelphia so appealing to Sanchez. "This team, this coach, the kind of offensive firepower they have," Sanchez said, "its just an exciting element to being here in Philadelphia." Winnipeg scored six straight goals after falling behind 2-1 in the first period and four Jets skaters recorded at least three points. Dustin Byfuglien had two goals and an assist, while Blake Wheeler finished with four helpers. Byfuglien has six goals and two assists over his last five games, while Wheeler now leads the Jets with 56 points. Tobias Enstrom and Olli Jokinen both added a goal and two assists, while Jacob Trouba, Michael Frolik and Evander Kane all lit the lamp. Al Montoya, who came in when Ondrej Pavelec was hurt Friday against the New York Rangers, made 25 saves and didnt need nearly that many behind Winnipegs offensive barrage. "These guys battled for me," said Montoya, who picked up his first victory since Feb. 2. "This is what they pay me for. Ive been waiting for this chance." Pavelec is out with a lower-body injury, joined on the sidelines by Chris Thorrburn, Jim Slater and John Albert.dddddddddddd Montoya may get the start again on Monday and is 1-1-1 with a 3.22 goals against average in his career versus the Blues. St. Louis leads the NHL with 99 points, putting it six ahead of the Colorado Avalanche for first place in the Central Division. The Blues have won seven of their last eight, including Saturdays 4-1 win over the Nashville Predators. Patrik Berglund scored twice, while Alexander Steen netted his career-high 30th goal and Vladimir Tarasenko scored. Ryan Miller ended with 30 saves. Berglund has 14 goals and 31 points on the season, including six tallies over his last eight games. "Im playing the same way," said Berglund. "Ive been shooting the puck. Its finding its way in, so its obviously nice." While Berglund is heating up, Tarasenko is out for at least the next six weeks due to a hand injury suffered versus the Preds. The 22-year-old, who has 21 goals and 22 assists on the season, is slated for hand surgery on Wednesday. Miller is 6-0-1 with a 1.70 GAA and .932 save percentage since being acquired from the Buffalo Sabres. He is 13-6-5 with a 2.66 GAA and .909 save percentage in 26 career meetings with the Jets franchise. The Blues have won three straight over the Jets since losing the first meeting of the season between the clubs in a shootout on Oct. 18. They have claimed six of the previous seven encounters overall as well as three in a row and six of eight at home in the series. MALMO, Sweden -- Anthony Mantha looked more relieved than jubilant after his three goals helped Canada start the world junior championship with a victory. It may be because there had been doubts the Longueuil, Que., native would make the team -- despite lighting up the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League this season -- because of his questionable defensive play. No one doubted his ability to put the puck in the net, as Mantha demonstrated with a hat trick in Canadas 7-2 win over Germany on Thursday. "Its a great feeling," the lanky, six-foot-four right winger said. "For me, personally, I had to get a big game going and I think thats what I did." It helped that Mantha was on a line with perhaps Canadas most dynamic playmaker in Jonathan Drouin, who assisted on all three of his goals -- two on power plays and one at even strength. But Mantha, the grandson of former NHL forward Andre Pronovost, scores wherever he plays. He had 35 goals in only 32 games with the Val dOr Foreurs before joining Team Canada two weeks ago for the run-up to the world juniors. He has 85 goals in 99 games over the last season and a half. Coach Brent Sutter said what clinched his spot was that ability to put the puck in the net, which there is not a lot of on this squad compared to past world junior teams. Sutter hopes a crash course in 200-foot hockey will make the Detroit Red Wings prospect a more complete player as the tournament goes on. "He can score goals, but there are other aspects of his game he needs to continue to work on," said Sutter. "Things Ive talked to him about one on one. "Its simple. Its being a competitor in all three zones and making sure hes responsible in all three zones. Not just for this tournament, but for him to be a good pro. Especially with the organization hell go to in Detroit. Thats what they expect there. You cant just play the offensive side of the puck." Sutter said Mantha wants to learn and feels he is already "a better player now than when he joined the team 11 days ago. That comes from our conversations. He understands that hes not going to get on the ice if hes only going to be a power-play guy." He got a passing grade in two-way play against the Germans, who were overmatched but took advantage of some early Canadian sloppiness to keep the score close through the first 15 minutes of play. Mantha has a remarkably quick release for a big man, and having the clever Drouin laying passes on his stick could be a vital asset as the tournament moves on and the competition gets tougher. He said his grandfather, who scored 109 goals in 556 NHL games from 1957 to 1968 for Montreal, Boston, Detroit and the Minnesota North Stars, was a key influence in his hockey development. He said Pronovost taught him "three key points" to success, but wont reveal them all. "One is work," he offered. But he still went into the teams selection camp two weeks ago in Toronto looking to prove he can do more than score. "For sure I had to make an impression," he said. "Not every player was guaranteed a spot and I had to battle through it. I got great news and now Im trying to carry it on." Drouin has played with Mantha before in an exhibition series and feels that chemistry is developing. "Anthonys a big guy," said the third overall pick of the Tampa Bay Lightning. "Hes hard to play against in the corners and everything. I try to use my hands and speed and I think we complement each other pretty well." The Canadian team got a rousing welcome from the crowd of 1,831 -- nearly all wearing Hockey Canada jerseys -- at the 5,800-seat Isstadion, but still looked nervous as the game began. The Germans got the opening goal off a faceoff in the Canada zone as Dorian Saeftel put a shot through traffic that fooled goalie Jake Paterson only 1:35 into the game. After Josh Anderson and Mantha gave Canada a lead, Janik Moser tied it for Germany after defenceman Adam Pelech whiffed on a clearing attempt. Then Canada took over as Mantha and Bo Horvat got goals before the intermission, Sam Reinhart and Mantha added goals in the second period and Nic Petan finished a play engineered by 16-year-old Conner McDavid in the third. McDavid had two assists, while his linemate Reinhart also had two points. Their line with Horvat could have had several if not for some fine saves by Shawinigan Cataractes goalie Marvin Cupper. "I think I played pretty well," said McDavid. "I missed a whole bunch of chances that Im pretty embarrassed about, but I thought I played an all right game. "That shift where Bo and Reino set me up for a couple of breakaways and the goalie made a couple of good saves -- I was beating myself up pretty good about it, but they laid off me. They were good about it." The shots were 30-24 for Canada, but the game was not nearly that close. A tougher test comes Saturday when Canada plays its second group stage game against the Czech Republic. Notes: Defenceman Griffin Reinhart sat out the first of three games he will miss due to a suspension incurred at last years world juniors. . . Germany has six players from Canadian junior teams, including Prince Albert star Leon Draisaitl who had a mostly quiet game, and another six who play in the U.S. . . A Stanley Cup champion as a rookie, Seguin followed that up by becoming the youngest player to lead the Boston Bruins in scoring.ENGLEWOOD, Colo. - Cornerback Chris Harris Jr. doesnt see any reason to lament his lot in life right now. Despite dealing with a torn left ACL that sidelined him for the Super Bowl and probably cost him $1 million in salary next season, the Denver Broncos most versatile cornerback was thrilled to sign his one-year restricted free-agent tender Tuesday. It will pay him $2,187,000 next season — or more than 1,000 times the $2,000 signing bonus he received four years ago as an undrafted college free agent. "Ill take it," Harris told The Associated Press. "Im definitely happy with it. Im excited to go back out there, get back healthy and lead this team back to the Super Bowl." Had Harris not gotten hurt in the playoffs, the Broncos would have probably had to use the highest tender on him — a one-year deal worth more than $3.1 million that carried a first-round pick as compensation. Instead, they were able to use the second-highest tender available. With the Broncos able to match any offers, no suitors came calling for Harris, whos been rehabbing at the Broncos facilities since shortly after undergoing surgery in February following Denvers loss to Seattle in the Super Bowl. "Teams were not going to give up a second-round pick. We realized that," Harris said. "We know that next year is a big year for me." Harris ligament in his left knee wasnt completely torn when he got hurt against San Diego in the playoffs and he and the Broncos are optimistic hell be ready by the start of training camp in July and will resume his role as a leader on Denvers defence. If that happens, the Broncos are expected to work toward a longer-term deal for Harris after next season when he hits unrestricted free agency. "I definitely think Ill be close to 100 per cent by the start of training camp," Harris said. "You never know with this type of injury, but the ligament wasnt completely torn and righht now Im feeling great.dddddddddddd The treatment is going great and Im improving each week." Harris is coming off a monster year in which he posted 65 tackles, 58 of them solo, three interceptions and 14 pass breakups while allowing the fifth-fewest yards receiving (25 a game) and tying for the eighth-fewest completions allowed (35) in the NFL among players targeted at least 60 times. His emergence and versatility playing both the slot and on the outside helped the Broncos decide to bid farewell to star Champ Bailey this off-season after he played sparingly last year. Then, the signing of fellow University of Kansas alum Aqib Talib led to the departure of free agent Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. "Champ and I always talked and we kind of understood this would probably happen. We werent surprised" by Baileys exit, Harris said. "Losing Champ, I feel I can take over his role on the field and also I can take over his leadership role. If you look at it, I was the starting corner pretty much the whole season last year. "You see my production and you see Talib, me and him have played together before, so were familiar with each other communication-wise, chemistry-wise, and thats a big thing." Harris was a freshman at Kansas in 2007 when Talib was an All-American his junior year before being drafted in the first round by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers that following spring. "Weve always been pretty tight. And friends always joke around saying, What if you and Talib play together now?" Harris said. "Now, its kind of crazy. I was just a freshman. I was young and still learning the game. Now, Im in my fourth season in the NFL and with all Aqibs experience, weve got a pretty solid duo. Its going to be great." ___ AP NFL website: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP_NFL ___ Follow AP Pro Football Writer Arnie Melendrez Stapleton on Twitter: http://twitter.com/arniestapleton Cheap Buffalo Sabres Gear Wholesale Calgary Flames Jerseys Cheap Adidas Colorado Avalanche Jerseys Montreal Canadiens Outlet Store Wholesale New Jersey Devils Jerseys Adidas Arizona Coyotes Jerseys Cheap Adidas Boston Bruins Jerseys Cheap Adidas Carolina Hurricanes Jerseys Chicago Blackhawks Shop Free Shipping Wholesale Columbus Blue Jackets Jerseys Dallas Stars Shop Free Shipping Cheap Adidas Detroit Red Wings Jerseys Anaheim Ducks Jerseys China Wholesale Edmonton Oilers Jerseys Florida Panthers Shop Free Shipping Wholesale Los Angeles Kings Jerseys Minnesota Wild Outlet Store Cheap Adidas Nashville Predators Jerseys Cheap Adidas New York Islanders Jerseys New York Rangers Winter Classic Jerseys Cheap Adidas Ottawa Senators Jerseys Cheap Adidas Philadelphia Flyers Jerseys Wholesale Pittsburgh Penguins Jerseys Cheap Adidas San Jose Sharks Jerseys St. Louis Blues Winter Classic Jerseys Wholesale Tampa Bay Lightning Jerseys Toronto Maple Leafs Outlet Store Vancouver Canucks Outlet Store Cheap Adidas Vegas Golden Knights Jerseys Cheap Adidas Washington Capitals Jerseys Cheap Adidas Winnipeg Jets Jerseys ' ' '

INDIANAPOLIS -- Michael Sam needed no introduction. He provided one anyway, subtly spelling out his desire to be known simply as a football player whose sexuality isnt a national story. "Good afternoon. My name is Michael Sam. I play football for the University of Missouri," he said to commence his first public appearance since announcing hes gay. Sam smiled and laughed often during a 12 1/2-minute news conference at Lucas Oil Stadium, looking relaxed, jovial and confident while taking questions from the hundreds of reporters surrounding the podium. Despite credentials that include the Southeastern Conference co-defensive player of the year award, Sam is projected only as a mid-round pick in the draft in May. Hes 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, falling somewhere between a defensive end in a 4-3 scheme and an outside linebacker in a 3-4 system. Where he winds up, Sam said he doesnt care. "Im a pass rusher. If you put me in a situation to get the quarterback, Im going to get the quarterback. Whoever coaches or GMs, this league is a passing league. Id like to believe in myself as a good pass rusher," Sam said. Hes not worried about being accepted, either, in light of the bullying scandal that emerged in Miami. "If the Miami Dolphins drafted me I would be excited to be a part of that organization," Sam said. "But Im not afraid of going into that environment. I know how to handle myself. I know how to communicate with my teammates. I know how to communicate with the coaches and other staff I need to communicate with." Mostly, Sam wants to communicate this: "I just wish you guys would just see me as Michael Sam the football player instead of Michael Sam the gay football player." His former Missouri teammates certainly did. "Hes happy with who he is. He doesnt shy away from who he is. Mike Sam has got a lot of personality. Hes a great guy. Hes not going to be any different than who he is every day," said wide receiver LDamian Washington, one of several ex-Tigers stars here for the NFLs annual scouting combine. If Sam were to slip down the draft board, determining a bias against his orientation or a fear of the potential distraction would be near impossible. If teams pass on him, theyre likely unsure how his combination of size and speed fits with their defence. "You only need one team. One team that believes in you. Theres 32 teams. You need one team," Washington said. Coaches and executives around the league were asked often this weekend for their thoughts on how Sam would fit, both on the field and in the locker room. "He would be welcomed, no different than any other player we have," New York Jets coach Rex Ryan said, adding: "The big thing we always talk about is respect in our locker room." JACKSON, Miss. - David Toms admits his initial idea for the weekend was to catch a little live college football action down in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on Saturday night when Alabama faces his beloved LSU.Two rounds of excellent golf at the Country Club of Jackson might have thrown a wrench in those plans.Toms and John Rollins each shot a 6-under 66 on Friday to share the second-round lead in the Sanderson Farms Championship.I had great intentions to (go to LSU), but after today, I guess I might have too late of a tee time, Toms said, smiling. The 47-year-old Toms — a 13-time PGA Tour winner who played at LSU — is playing some of his best golf in years and was bogey-free through the first two rounds. He hasnt won since 2011 at Colonial.A patient approach and a hot putter have put him in contention in his past two tournaments. He has made just two bogeys over his past 90 holes, dating to the second round of the McGladrey Classic two weeks ago where he tied for 14th.Just to play well is what excites me, Toms said. You never know, when you hang around on the leaderboard a little bit, every once in a while youre able to get one.Rollins had eight birdies and two bogeys to share the lead with Toms. He won the last of his three tour titles in 2009 and finished 177th on the money list last season. To get off to that kind of start is always great, birdieing the first three, birdied four out of the first five, and really just kind of helped me relax a little bit and just kind of get in the rhythm of the round, Rollins said. I hit the ball well, made some good putts and put myself in a good position.Toms and Rollins were at 10-under 134.Canadas Nick Taylor was two strokes back after a 69. Robert Streb, the McGladrey winner, was tied with Tom Gillis, three strokes back. Gillis had a 68, and Streb shot 70.Play was suspended because of darkness with 15 players unable to finish. First-round leader Sebastian Cappelen was 3 over for the round and 4 under overall with two holes left. The course was slightly damp for Thursdays opening round after overnight rain, but a full day of sunshine and wind dried the course and made the greens much faster.Temperatures started around 40 degrees early Friday morning. Toms said he doesnt like cold weather, but found a way to get through the first few chilly hours.I had the gloves and hand warmers, two sweaters on, a jacket, rain pants, Toms said. We were lucky this morning that we didnt have much wind when we teed off, because it would have been awfully cold. And it turned to a top-flight sports showcase that it knows how to do very well. The CBC and Radio-Canada renewed their commitment to Olympic coverage by securing the broadcast rights to the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea and 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo. The network will partner with Bell Media and Rogers Media to deliver the Games.I think it shows the belief that the Olympic committee has in us continuing to deliver compelling Olympic moments to Canadians, said CBC president Hubert Lacroix.Executives from all three media companies agreed the demands of todays Olympic broadcasting culture make it very challenging — from both a financial and manpower perspective — to go it alone with an event of this magnitude. In addition, consumers now want access to all events in real time on a broadcasting format that works for them. Jeffrey Orridge, executive director of sports properties and general manager of the Olympics at CBC, said a team effort will help facilitate that.We are collaborating on the production, he said. We are going to share airwaves, were going to share technical resources, were going to share our expertise and were going to share talent.Specific coverage details havent been finalized but given its strong reach, expect the CBC to broadcast the top-tier events. TSN/RDS would get the next level down, followed by Sportsnet, then TSN2, and then Sportsnet One, Orridge said. What were going to basically offer is a 24-hour Olympic network, said Bell Medias Phil King, president of CTV sports and entertainment programming. If you have CBC, TSN and Sportsnet, you will have a 24-hour Olympic network.Financial terms of the deal werent revealed. Orridge said the agreement was respectful of the stature of the Games and certainly fiscally responsible on the part of the public broadcaster. I cant give you specifics on terms of the agreement, he said. But suffice it to say that weve put together an extraordinarily viable business model that will be either a break-even or revenue-positive model. The CBC, which had the broadcast rights for the recent Sochi Olympics and has been a longtime rights-holder, was already tabbed to show the 2016 Summer Games in Rio.Its a nation-building and nation-sharing event and that brings communities together, Orridge said. Part of our ethos is about being a catalyst and an inspiration for our communities and cultivating and promoting and highlighting and showcasing Canadian talent. And thats what we do.The broadcaster reclaimed the rights to the 2014 Games after losing the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the 2012 London Games to CTV. The three broadcasters worked together at the Sochi Games, although this deal is more extensive for the specialty networks.ddddddddddddLongtime sports broadcasting executive Keith Pelley, now president of Rogers Media, helped build the broadcast consortium model that was used in Vancouver. There is no question that you need multiple broadcasters and multiple outlets to be able to give Canadians what they want from the Olympic Games, Pelley said. There are so many events going on at the same time that one individual broadcaster — regardless of the multi-platforms — can no longer serve the public the way that they need to to actually experience the Games and thats why this partnership came to fruition.Pelley added Rogers has worked closely with the CBC on several initiatives, including the current NHL deal. This is an extension of that, the partnership is just a little bit reversed, he said. They will control the editorial content and the sales and we will be there to support them in every way that they possibly can and give them the airtime to give Canadians unprecedented choice.Orridge said talks with Rogers and Bell began months ago, and were easy to kickstart given the success of the Sochi experience. The news comes at a tumultuous time for CBC, which is being sued by star radio personality Jian Ghomeshi, who alleges breach of confidence, bad faith and defamation by the public broadcaster in a $55-million lawsuit. The network severed ties with Ghomeshi over the weekend because of information it had received about the Q radio show host. Ghomeshi said he has been fired for his sexual behaviour.Last November, the broadcaster lost NHL rights to Rogers Media in a whopping $5.2-billion deal. That led to a dramatic loss of advertising revenue for a network already struggling with federal budget cuts.In April, Lacroix announced that 657 jobs would be slashed to meet a $130-million budget shortfall. Lacroix said at the time 42 per cent of the sports department would be laid off, trimming 38 sports jobs from 90 current positions. In June, he said there would be an additional 1,000 to 1,500 positions cut by 2020.He also announced in April the broadcaster would no longer compete for professional sports rights and would cover fewer sports events, including amateur athletics. But the Olympics are still a product they want to be associated with, Lacroix said. Its a way for us to connect and to tell stories to Canadians from all across the country, he said. This ability to do this in a context with partners allows us to bring the best Olympic experience to Canadians, bar none.Lacroix added the partnership with Rogers and Bell will mean more comprehensive coverage for Canadians. Its a textbook example of us being able to bring the whole broadcasting community to the service of Canadians, he said. If it had not been for open-mindedness and eagerness and interest of our friends at Bell and Rogers, Canadians would not be getting the kind of coverage that they will be in 18 and 20.———Follow @GregoryStrongCP on Twitter. The Kansas City starter allowed seven hits and one earned run over six innings. Gordon homered in the fourth and Cain added another two-run shot in the eighth to knock Happ out of the game. Despite the loss, Toronto maintained its 2 1/2-game lead on second-place New York in the American League East division standings after the Yankees dropped a 6-1 decision to Minnesota. The Blue Jays entered this four-game series on an offensive tear, piling up the runs over three straight series sweeps. The trick will be keeping that win streak hangover to a minimum. "When you win nine games in a row, you expect to come out the next day and win," said Toronto catcher Erik Kratz. "That mentality hasnt changed the last two nights. We were a couple inches away last night from winning and tonight we were a couple hits away from being back in this game." After the game, the Blue Jays announced that top prospect Marcus Stroman had been recalled from triple-A Buffalo and would start Saturday afternoon. "We want to see him as a starter," Gibbons said. "Hes been really good down there this year and this is his opportunity." Toronto looked ready to do some damage in the first inning after Jose Reyes led off with a triple and Bautista reached on a walk. But like he did all night, Vargas snuffed out the threat. "I feel something like that hopefully sets the tone for the game and fires us up," he said. "We were able to get a run the next inning and keep it moving from there." Kansas City (26-28) padded its lead when Gordon smacked his fourth home run of the season. That waas more than enough offence for Vargas (5-2), who allowed seven hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out seven.dddddddddddd Bautista gave the crowd of 21,543 a charge in the fifth with his 14th home run of the season. Edwin Encarnacion followed with a two-out walk but Brett Lawrie of Langley, B.C., struck out. Happ (4-2) was tagged for six earned runs and nine hits over 7 2/3 innings. He walked two batters and had six strikeouts. Toronto brought the potential tying run to the plate in the seventh against reliever Aaron Crow. Bautista walked and Lawrie hit a two-out single but Dioner Navarro flew out. In the eighth, Cain tacked on some insurance runs with his second home run of the season. "This is more of the offence that we envisioned coming out of spring training," said Royals manager Ned Yost. "Were not going to be a club thats going to lead the league in home runs but weve got home run power that we havent used." Recent triple-A callup Bobby Korecky relieved Happ in the eighth and retired the lone batter he faced. With the bullpen in need of a rest, he stayed on for the ninth and retired the Royals in order. Korecky was sent back down after the game. Notes: Stroman pitched in a relief role earlier this season before being stretched out again in Buffalo. The move also allows the Blue Jays to give Drew Hutchison -- whos coming off Tommy John surgery -- a little more rest. Hutchison will now start Tuesday. ... Bautista threw out a runner at first base for the second straight night. Omar Infante hit a flare into right field that he thought was going into the seats. Bautista slid and trapped the ball after it bounced before getting Infante in plenty of time at first base. "I dont know if youll see a better play in baseball today than that play right there," Yost said. "Omar hit the ball and lost it, he thought it was foul. For Bautista to come, smother the ball, one, and then still see that he had a play at first base, I dont think Ive ever seen a play like that. Tremendous play." ... Encarnacion, who has hit 16 homers this month, walked three times. ... The game took three hours one minute to play. ... Right-hander Aaron Brooks (0-0) is scheduled to start Saturday for the Royals. ... The Blue Jays have homered in 12 of their last 13 games. ... Korecky has a microscopic 0.29 earned-run average with five saves in 22 games with the Bisons. OKLAHOMA CITY -- San Antonio fought off Father Time, the league MVP and an injury to its best player to return to the NBA Finals. The Spurs beat the Oklahoma City Thunder 112-107 in overtime Saturday night in Game 6 of the Western Conference finals to set up a rematch with the Miami Heat. San Antonio will host Game 1 on Thursday night and will try to avenge last years heartbreaking loss. San Antonio led Miami 3-2 before losing Game 6 in overtime, then dropping Game 7. "People keep talking like we werent close to winning, but we were ready to win last year," Spurs centre Tim Duncan said. "Were happy its the Heat again. Weve got that bad taste in our mouths still." A trio of 30-somethings led the way for the Spurs. Duncan had 19 points and 15 rebounds, Boris Diaw scored 26 points and Manu Ginobili chipped in 15 points and six rebounds for the Spurs. San Antonio pulled this one out despite All-Star point guard Tony Parker missing the entire second half and overtime with left ankle soreness. Popovich said Parker had been struggling with the ankle since Game 4 of the series. The Spurs overcame it the way they have for more than a decade -- with teamwork, passing and great performances by role players. "We didnt know how much Tony was hurt in his ankle," Diaw said. "But we didnt want to go to Game 7, and we didnt know if he would be ready to play if we did or if he would be 100 per cent, so we tried to get it over with tonight." It was the third-best playoff scoring effort of Diaws 11-year career and his best since 2006. "Boris was amazing," Duncan said. "He had an unbelievable game. Hes had a great series." Russell Westbrook had 34 points, eight assists, seven rebounds and six steals, and MVP Kevin Durant added 31 points and 14 rebounds for the Thunder. But Oklahoma City committed 20 turnovers that led to 33 points for the Spurs. Westbrook and Durant each had seven turnovers. "We started settling for too many jump shots," Thunder coach Scott Brooks said. "It just seemed like we couldnt get enough good looks at the basket. Defensively, they just had us scrambling around." San Antonio also handled Serge Ibakas return from injury. Oklahoma Citys defensive star missed the first two games with a strained left calf, but he returned to help the Thunder win the next two games and tie the series. The series featured five blowouts wins by the home teams, but the closeout game was a gem. Oklahoma City overcame a 12-point deficit in the fourth quarter to force overtime. "I have to be honest, this victory is really sweet because we know we played one hell of a team, and we take great satisfaction in that since theyre so special," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. In overtime, Duncans shot from the baseline rattled in to give the Spurs a 110-107 lead with 19 seconds to go. Durant missed a good look at a 3-pointer, and the Spurs rebounded and went to the line. Diaw missed the first and made the second free throw to make it a four-point lead for the Spurs. Westbrook missed a wild 3-pointer, and Spurs wrapped it up. San Antonio led by 12 early in the fourth quarter, but the Thunder chipped away at the free throw line after getting the Spurs into foul trouble. Back-to-back baskets by Westbrook and Durant cut San Antonios lead to 93-91 with 4:01 to play, leading to the frantic final minutes. Westbrook was fouled on a drive with 9.3 seconds to play. He made both free throws to tie the score at 101. Ginobilis fadeaway at the free-throw line against Westbrook missed, and the game went to overtime. Ginobili said the Thunder were a significant hurdle, and he expects them to be a roadblock in the future. "They are a pretty good team," he said. "They have so much talent, so much athleticism, so much future. They are a tough team." Notes: The Spurs had just two assists and missed all five of their 3-point attempts in the first quarter. ... Spurs C Matt Bonner started for the second straight game. He made just 1 of 5 3-pointers in the first half as the Thunder backed off of him. ... Westbrook had four steals in the first half. ... Thunder coach Scott Brooks was issued a technical foul in the third quarter. ... Westbrook made his first 10 free throws and 17 of 18 overall. ... Or so he thought. As it turned out, Johnson stepped back a little too far, and the shot was discounted immediately when officials ruled he stepped out of bounds. The 76ers were awarded possession, and James Anderson made a pair of free throws a half-second later to seal Philadelphias 113-108 win over the Boston Celtics on Monday night. "Thats that," 76ers coach Brett Brown said. "His foot was out of bounds." Philadelphia led by 19 points in the second quarter, but Johnson hit 3-pointers on consecutive Boston possessions to trim the deficit to two as part of a 14-3 run to close the third quarter. After an 11-4 Philadelphia run to open the fourth quarter, Boston flirted with a comeback and got within two points several times down the stretch but could never pull even. The Sixers aided the Celtics near comeback with dismal foul shooting — they were 24 for 38 from the line. "We missed free throws, Rondo was Rondo, Johnson made some shots," Brown said. "But Im pleased we were able to find a way to win." Michael Carter-Williams had 21 points and 14 rebounds and Tony Wroten scored 20 points for the Sixers in their final home game of the season. "It was great to win at home," Carter-Williams said. "It was great to end on a positive note." Carter-Williams had a key steal and pass to Wroten in the final minutes which led to Wroten making two free throws in helping keep the Sixers ahead. "His ability to change things and lead breaks after he rebounds makes him unusually good," Brown said. "And I think he was pretty darn good tonight." Kelly Olynyk scored 28 points to lead the Celtics. Jeff Green had 27 points and Avery Bradley added 23. Rajon Rondo finished with eight points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds. "We definitely got aa lot to play for, and it showed tonight.dddddddddddd. We couldve laid down when we were down," said Brandon Bass, who finished nine points and eight rebounds for Boston. "We kept fighting and made it a game." Philadelphia took three of four games from Boston in winning the season series for the first time since 2006-07. The banged-up Celtics played without Jared Sullinger (left ankle sprain), Jerryd Bayless (hyperextended right knee) and Kris Humphries (sore right knee). After missing the past two games with a strained left shin, Rondo returned to action and dominated the games first five minutes before Thaddeus Youngs elbow to the head forced him to briefly leave the game. Rondo had five assists in the first 5:08 as Boston took an early 16-7 lead. But the minute the Celtics floor general left the game, the Sixers took over and outscored the Celtics 60-34 the rest of the half. Casper Ware made a long 3-pointer to cap a 22-9 run that put Philadelphia up by four late in the first quarter. Rondo, who returned late in the first quarter, followed suit by driving for a layup and drawing a foul. He then rebounded his own miss at the line and put the ball right back up for another two to erase the lead in 10 seconds. The 76ers turned it on again in the second quarter, this time going on a 28-8 run to build a 19-point lead highlighted by Youngs steal and ensuing cross-court pass to Wroten for an uncontested slam dunk. Green led all players at the half with 14 points, but Carter-Williams paced Philadelphia with 12 points and eight assists as the 76ers took a 67-50 lead at the break. NOTES: The Sixers scored 46 of 67 first-half points in the paint to the Celtics 18. ... The Celtics are the only team the 76ers have beaten more than once this season. Taylor, a first-round pick in 2011, is now under contract through the 2015 season. The team had until Saturday to pick up the option. Browns first-year coach Mike Pettine said after watching Taylor during a three-day minicamp this week that Taylor "is a great fit for what we want to do on defence." Taylor says he hopes to be in Cleveland for his entire career and "be part of the team that turns this franchise back into a perennial winner and championship contender." Last season, Taylor moved inside to the nose position in Clevelands 3-4 defence and had 57 tackles and two sacks as the Browns finished ninth in the NFL in total defence. James McCann Jersey . Why should Phil Kessel have to talk to these pukes every day? Burke said, speaking to reporters on Tuesday morning at the Prime Time Sports Management Conference in Toronto. Burke served as Maple Leafs president and general manager from 2008 to 2013 and acquired Kessel from the Boston Bruins in 2009. Following the Leafs loss in Buffalo, TSN Radio 1050s Jonas Siegel approached Kessel for comment, but the 27-year-old brusquely refused. The 59-year-old Burke had his own notoriously testy relationship with Toronto media and feeels that Kessel is currently the target of undue scorn.dddddddddddd Burke cited Anaheim Ducks defenceman Francois Beauchemin, a Leaf from 2009 to 2011, as a player who couldnt cope with the media crush in the city. Its a miracle some nights that these guys dont drill these guys, Burke said of the Leafs and the media. Theres a hailstorm after every loss and they dont care whether they get it right or not. For his part, Kessel addressed the controversy on Monday. I think Ive talked a decent amount, Kessel told reporters. Ill come out sometimes to talk, but sometimes I dont. But I dont have too much to say about losses like that. Kessel and his Maple Leafs return to action on Tuesday night when they play host to the Nashville Predators.
